Buying Silver coins was very different in the 1800s, because for the first 50 years, from 1858 to 1908, all Canadian circulation coins were produced at the Royal Mint in London or a private mint in Birmingham, England, the Heaton Mint. Before Canadian coins could be produced on Canadian soil, a mint had to be constructed at the proposed site in Ottawa. After completion, Lord Grey and his wife Lady Grey activated the presses on Jan. 2, 1908, and the new mint began producing an array of Canadian coins, which eventually led to the production of Silver Canadian Leafs and other fine Canadian bullion.
