Rare Diorama of Journey To The West; Colonial Malaya era c. 1920s
A very old Diorama. At a time when there were a lot of street performance, street opera etc, items like these were used for performers etc to narrate stories for their performance. Now, i have had this for 6 years or so. Purchased from a top antiques dealer. The dealer, and before that his father, has owned this item for a total of 80 years, then. So its typical work of that period. Very nice. The box is wrapped in decorative paper which must have been shining and beautiful back in the day. Still intact but losses all around. The box itself is intact and sturdy. The front panel has spots on the screen and the only way to clean it is from inside. I dont know much about Journey To The West but it looks like all four main characters are there - Sun Wukong, Xuanzang, Zhu Bajie & Sha Wujing. I have seen in overseas collection, where the characters are removed and placed in old similar age chinese glass cases, with less decorative but still indicative that it is a Diorama of some sort. This when placed in a home can look simple but spectacular. So there is always that choice for something so old. A good piece to acquire. Dimension: 31cm (width) x 26cm (height) x 10cm (depth) of box. Thank you.
